Hey khp1, can you shift it into the first gear when the engine is turned off?

    That’s interesting.

Did you have any issues when taking off the old one?

Also, could you take a photo and post it here, so we can take a look?

Hey A.Thomas92, sorry to hear about your issues. As for the P1709 error code – the switch (which is located inside the gear lever assembly) is the most likely cause. These things wear out with time, and you can only imagine how many times it has been activated during these 150.000+ miles.

Luckily, this switch is not expensive, and it’s easy to replace.

If it was up to me, I would buy a second-hand AC panel. Unless you know your way around electronics and have needed tools, this would be the easiest way.

Hey MechanicalFrogs, was the flywheel replaced when the new clutch kit was fitted?

Hey Metropolis101, judging on the ‘loud whirring noise’ you’ve mentioned, it seems your starter is not good. Its gears don’t engage the flywheel, and it just spins freely.

ggrider, I had a similar situation several times. Turn the key and the starter just doesn’t want to turn. In one case, the starter itself had seized (which is not likely your cause, as it works now). In others, the starter solenoid didn’t engage. A gentle wack with a hammer solved the issue. This is probably what happened to yours, and the solenoid ‘unjammed’ as the car was bouncing on the tow truck.

redgigahertz, it looks you have several overlapping issues here. For a start, can you tell us which codes you have (those in P0xxx format)?

Hey, Tuimoe22, sorry to hear about your issues.

Do you have white smoke coming from the exhaust (more noticeable at higher engine speeds)?

Also, can you check the front footwells for any traces of coolant? The heater matrix inside the cabin may be broken.

    Is that a turbocharged engine?

That’s interesting. So the plug wire just popped out on its own, while driving? Have you been changing your plugs recently?

Do you have a check engine light on? If so, is it solid or does it blink?

LJWade, you could try taping it down somehow using a muffler repair tape. I would also tie everything together with a piece of wire for some extra strength. Hopefully, that will get you through the next 3 weeks.

You’ll need quite a lot of parts for this conversation, marc.soda. In addition to the gearbox itself, you’ll need the flywheel and clutch, clutch cylinder, gear linkage, and brake reservoir with hoses, just to name a few. In all fairness, finding a parts car (crashed or something like that) is the only feasible option.

What’s wrong with your automatic transmission?

Hey RJPinVA, just take off the nut that is holding the wiper arm against the wiper mechanism (and its splined shaft), then refit it in the correct position. And then reinstall the nut. Repeat this for the other wiper, too.
