I have been having trouble putting my car into gear, no noises but stiffness and it doesn’t do it all the time, I have had a new clutch but it still kept happening, i then had a new gearbox it was driving lovely then 2 weeks later I felt something go underneath my feet and it got stuck again, it’s in the garage at the moment and he said the only thing not new is the gear cables but he thought they looked ok, he’s keeping it for a week and driving it

    Hello.

    Which car do you have?

Make sure the clutch pedal is fully pressed to the floor before trying to shift gears. If the clutch is not fully engaged, the gears will grind and it will be difficult to put the car into gear.

If you are parked safely, you can try to identify any obvious problems. For example, check if the clutch pedal feels normal, or if there are any warning lights on the dashboard.

Although your mechanic initially considered them okay, worn or damaged gear cables could still be the culprit. They might become stiff or bind at certain points, causing difficulty shifting gears.

While your mechanic initially thought the gear cables looked okay, they might be worth revisiting. Gear cables can fray or stretch over time, causing difficulty shifting. A closer inspection or even replacing them might be worthwhile, especially since it’s one of the few remaining original parts.

This is the most common reason. Ensure you press the clutch pedal all the way down to the floor before attempting to shift gears.

Even though the mechanic initially thought the gear cables looked alright, they could still be a culprit, especially since they’re the only original component in the clutch system.
