I have an idea to build a turbo civic but where at the push of a button or something I can “disable” the turbo and switch the tune to N/A so that way I can make power when I want and save gas for the daily drive.

You could probably use an electric wastegate to switch it on and off. However, you may not see a significantly increased fuel consumption during daily driving with a turbo either

Completely disabling a turbocharger while the engine is running is complex and potentially dangerous. Blocking the airflow can lead to overboost and engine damage. Diverting the airflow requires complex valving systems and precise control to avoid disrupting engine performance.

Physically bypassing or disconnecting the turbo system would require extensive and complicated modifications to the engine, intake, and exhaust systems. This would be expensive, time-consuming, and potentially unreliable.

Physically disabling the turbocharger wouldn’t be the best solution. Blocking airflow or fuel would damage the unit and potentially the engine. Removing the turbo entirely would require major modifications and leave you with significant power loss even in “NA mode.”

Implementing a reliable and safe system to switch between turbo and N/A operation on-the-fly is incredibly complex. You’d need to modify various engine components, including the intake manifold, exhaust system, wastegate control, and ECU programming.

Disabling a turbo entirely would require complex valving or bypassing the turbo system altogether. This would involve significant modifications and custom parts, making it expensive and potentially unreliable.

Implementing a system to seamlessly switch between a turbo and naturally aspirated (NA) setup would be incredibly complex. You’d need a bypass system for the turbocharger, a way to switch fuel maps and engine tuning on the fly, and potentially modifications to the intake and exhaust manifolds. This would be very expensive and require significant expertise.

That sounds like a cool project! Having the ability to switch between turbocharged and naturally aspirated modes in your Civic could give you the best of both worlds—power when you want it and fuel efficiency for daily driving. You’ll likely need to install a switch or control mechanism that can adjust various engine parameters, such as boost levels, fuel delivery, and ignition timing, to switch between the two modes. Additionally, you may need to tune your engine management system to accommodate both setups effectively. It’s definitely a custom job, but with the right expertise and components, it’s definitely doable. Good luck with your project!
