Spark Problem – Mercury Cougar 302 1977

I have a 1977 Cougar with a 302 in it. It’s not getting spark and I’m not exactly sure what’s wrong. The coil is good but I’m a little confused about how the point’s system works or if that is even my problem. But If the points system in the distributor doesn’t work would it stop my car from getting spark? And if so can you just bypass it? Thank you
